Tax Day Pens

Paying taxes was never a festive occasion for me. This is perhaps one of the holidays that I don’t want to remember and would love to strike off my calendar. But what can I do? I’m bound (and somewhat forced) to pay them.
I read from an article a few years back that there are only two things that are constant in life. One is change, and the other one is taxes. This is so true.
The town had a project that aimed to tell the public that they should file their returns on time. They gave away customized printed promotional pens to remind people to file my return on the 15th of April. It happened in a place where I planned to relax – the park.
While I was walking in the park, one teenage lady gave me customized printed promotional ballpoint pens that has a “pay your taxes on time” written on it in bold letters. I was fumed to think that I’d be shelling out my hard-earned money again to give to the government coffers. I wanted to throw the ballpoint pen away, but I thought that I might as well use it. I paid for it with my taxes anyway, so why waste it?
That pen was like a cheap shot. The government gets to force me to pay thousands of dollars as taxes, and what do I get? A cheap pen. If they gave me customized printed promotional high tech pens, I might have appreciated it.
